Kathryn Rabinow: Sines, Cosines, & Tangents
The show, Sines, Cosines and Tangents, focuses on signs we see as we go about our daily lives. As an educator Rabinow knows that there is a great difference between 'seeing' and 'looking and focusing'. She encourages the viewer to take a good look at the actual and unaltered photographs of the signs; to pause a moment to think about possible multiple meanings, to laugh aloud at their incomprehensibility or sheer silliness.
A tangent is defined as something diverging from an original purpose or course. The color images in this current show truly do diverge from Rabinow's original focus on the black and white signs [sines and cosines] that help us navigate our lives. The large images (tangents) provide an opportunity not to merely navigate our lives but rather to expand them with beauty, dreams and secret stories.
